March – The Thaw | Light Returns
March always feels like a quiet turning point. The sun lingers a little longer each evening, and with the return of daylight savings the days suddenly feel brighter and fuller. After months of long winter nights, that extra light feels like a gift.
This is the time when seed trays begin appearing on the kitchen table and garden plans slowly come back to life. Starting those early seeds is always encouraging—tiny green reminders that spring is on its way, even while the ground outside is still frozen.
Here in northern Minnesota, March likes to keep us guessing. One day might feel like a soft hint of spring with melting snow and mild air, and the next can bring another snowfall. But the warmth is encouraging, and the light keeps returning.
Out in the bee yards, we’re beginning to prepare for the season ahead. The hives still need support through these late winter weeks, so we continue feeding the bees and checking on them whenever the weather allows. Those first warmer days make us especially hopeful as we watch for signs that the colonies are coming through winter strong.
It’s a season of small changes and quiet anticipation—more sunlight, the first seeds started indoors, and the slow feeling that winter is beginning to loosen its hold.
